Darc, Bite inhibition. I would like to have some info on bite inhibition for a dog who is 18 mons old (I got one from a rescue and she bites). I do not want to return her, but what shall I do. She is small 11 lbs. I read “puppy stop biting me!” but she is not a puppy. Thank you in advance for any advice. Sincerely, Lucy Handler.
Lucy, is she biting or is she playing and mouthing and her teeth connect? It’s completely different. If she is mouthing, playing, use the bite inhibition and see if it works. Be patient, keep your calm self on, no panic or hitting or alpha rolls. If she’s biting, breaking the skin, drawing blood, find a good positive trainer to help you. If she keeps biting, you may have no alternative but to return her unless you start working hard to stop the biting. A biting dog requires lifelong and absolute management, you can never trust her alone with children or people who don’t acknowledge that they may get bitten when she’s present. Again, find a professional trainer to help you determine why she’s biting and you will have your answer. A dog who bites is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I hope that she’s simply an adolescent who hasn’t received bite inhibition training yet. It’s better to have that done by four months but it’s never too late to try. Darc
